Queen Elizabeth II Statue Unveiled: A Royal Legacy in Bronze

A new memorial honoring Queen Elizabeth II's reign is being meticulously designed by Lord Foster and his firm, Foster + Partners. They recently utilized a virtual reality headset for a hybrid mock-up, allowing for an early assessment of the scale and placement of the planned bronze statues. The memorial, situated at Marlborough Gate in London, will feature a statue of Queen Elizabeth II in her twenties, standing on a plinth overlooking The Mall. This depiction aims for accessibility, drawing inspiration from a celebrated 1955 portrait.

Complementing the Queen's statue, a smaller bronze figure of Prince Philip, her consort of over 70 years, will be placed a few paces behind. He will be sculpted in his naval uniform, depicted looking up at his wife, signifying their partnership. The Queen's statue will stand 7.3m high, with the figure at 3m on a 4.3m plinth. Prince Philip's statue will be 3.8m high, with a 2.3m figure on a 1.5m plinth, positioned 20m behind the Queen's.

Lord Janvrin, chairman of the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee, emphasized the importance of the Queen's statue being prominently located on the ceremonial route. The decision to place Prince Philip behind her reflects their team-like dynamic and her status as head of state. This memorial is part of a larger design for Queen Elizabeth II Place, incorporating gardens and a glass bridge.
