Queen Camilla has recognized the significance of "Their Second World War," a new book designed to educate children aged eight to 14 about the sacrifices of World War Two. The author, Victoria Panton Bacon, developed the book to feature authentic accounts from war veterans, ensuring their contributions are not forgotten.
The Queen stated that the book would greatly assist young readers in understanding the historical period that secured current freedoms. A notable section within the book recounts the experiences of Ivor Foster, a 100-year-old survivor of a massive RAF "thousand-bomber raid" on Essen in Germany, which occurred on March 11, 1945. Foster, an air gunner, described the overwhelming sight of 1,079 aircraft in the sky during the operation.
Additional chapters in "Their Second World War" cover critical aspects of the war, including the Holocaust, the Home Guard, the Merchant Navy, D-Day, navigation techniques, evacuations, and the Enigma code. Panton Bacon mentioned that some stories were edited for younger audiences while preserving their gravity, aiming to make the realities of war accessible without diminishing their importance.
