PVR INOX Cuts Ad Time to 10 Mins After Consumer Court Rulings
9 Oct
Summary
- Consumer court ordered PVR INOX to pay Rs. 20,000 for 22 minutes of ads.
- A Bengaluru patron received Rs. 1 lakh for watching 25 minutes of commercials.
- PVR INOX reduced cinema ad duration from 15-18 minutes to 10 minutes.
In a significant development for cinema advertising, a Hyderabad consumer was awarded Rs. 20,000 in compensation and Rs. 5,000 for litigation costs by the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission-II. The ruling, issued in September 2026, addressed a complaint filed in 2025 regarding 22 minutes of advertisements shown before a movie screening.
This marks the second instance where PVR INOX faced penalties for excessive ad durations. Previously, a Bengaluru consumer received Rs. 1 lakh after complaining about 25 minutes of commercials and trailers before a film. These judgments highlight growing concerns among moviegoers about lengthy pre-show advertisements.
Responding to these consumer court decisions and an exclusive interaction, PVR INOX's Executive Director, Sanjeev Kumar Bijli, stated that the company has reduced its advertising time. The ad duration has been decreased from an earlier range of 15-18 minutes to a self-proclaimed "sweet spot" of 10 minutes. This adjustment aims to prevent any compromise on the overall movie-watching experience for patrons.
Bijli emphasized that PVR INOX is closely monitoring the situation and seeking a balance that satisfies moviegoers without significantly impacting advertising revenue. The company expressed hope that the revised ad time will be acceptable to a broader audience.
