Summary
- Billy Idol releases emotional new ballad "Dying to Live"
- Idol reflects on his rebellious past in upcoming documentary
- Collaborates with Oscar-nominated composer J. Ralph on the song

In a surprising move, legendary punk rocker Billy Idol has unveiled a new, unusually sentimental ballad titled "Dying to Live." The song, which Idol co-wrote with Oscar-nominated composer J. Ralph, sees the former Generation X singer reflecting on his younger, hungrier days.
"Once when I was younger/Back when I knew hunger," Idol sings over piano and strings, a far cry from his signature sneering vocals. The track's accompanying music video combines animated Idol with archival footage, hinting at the reflective nature of the project.
Idol's newfound introspection comes as he looks back on his storied career for an upcoming documentary, "Billy Idol Should Be Dead," which premiered at the Tribeca International Film Festival earlier this year and is expected to hit streaming services in 2026. The film, Idol says, "inspired me to want to write a song for the end that brings together what I saw in the film; all the strands of my life."
Collaborating with J. Ralph, Idol sought to capture the "range of emotions" his life story evokes through a "symphonic" sound that would reveal the "nuance and vulnerability" of his lyrics. The result is a surprisingly vulnerable, yet still defiant, look at the punk icon's journey.
