Pune's Dhol-Tasha Troupes Struggle to Meet Ganeshotsav Demand

Pune's Ganeshotsav celebrations are experiencing a notable shift towards traditional dhol-tasha performances, with demand soaring this year. This resurgence is largely attributed to escalating concerns about noise pollution associated with DJs and loudspeakers. However, the growing preference for these traditional instruments has outpaced the available supply.

Existing dhol-tasha troupes in Pune are finding it challenging to fulfill the increased number of bookings from various mandals and housing societies. The 170 troupes based in the city are stretched to their limits, often performing for multiple processions during immersion or at various points throughout the festival for hundreds of mandals.

The Dhol Tasha Mahasangh acknowledges the demand, stating efforts are underway to accommodate as many requests as possible. This includes suggesting adjustments to troupe sizes to allow for wider coverage. The organization is also working to manage practice schedules and locations to minimize disturbance to residents.

A positive trend amidst the shortage is the increasing participation of younger individuals, aged 18-24, and even children, joining troupes. Despite this influx of new talent, the immediate challenge remains securing enough players to satisfy Pune's enthusiastic appetite for traditional Ganeshotsav sounds.
