Pune audiences will experience an immersive theatrical journey aboard the iconic Deccan Queen train with the production 'Sahib, Sindh, Sultan.' The show, presented at Kalachhaya Cultural Centre, aims to make attendees feel as if they are actually on the train, not just watching a performance.
Directed by Vaidehi Sancheti, this "infotainment program" skillfully blends storytelling, music, and sensory design. It invites the audience into a train coupe to interact with characters, transforming casual conversation into immersive theatre. The aim is for attendees to feel like fellow travelers, singing along and engaging with personal narratives.
The performance features four unique personalities, each reacting differently to the journey. Their exchanges organically reveal railway history, trivia, and personal memories, with the show's title concept unveiled at the end. The familiar Pune to Mumbai route of train number 12124 is intentionally used, leveraging nostalgia for the landscape, sounds, and smells.
The production also touches upon the history of Indian railways, dating back to the first passenger train in 1853. Sancheti's personal love for train journeys, remembering them as affordable, romantic, and adventurous, deeply inspires the show. Sound and light design enhance the dramatic reading format, effectively recreating a train adventure within the theatre space.
