A Teesside pub choir, Infant Hercules, recently performed at the Manchester Arena for The National Lottery's Big Night of Musicals, an event watched by 12,000 people and filmed for BBC One. The choir originated in 2013 with the aim of providing a space for men to discuss their mental health.
Initially attracting members with a free drink offer, the choir has since blossomed to over 140 members. One member, Graeme McIvor, found solace and community after his son's death in 2019, stating the choir became "everything" to him. The group, supported by The National Lottery, meets weekly in Stockton-on-Tees.
Founder Mike McGrother described the experience as "magical," particularly performing after Sam Ryder and the cast of Jesus Christ Superstar. McGrother noted Ryder's kindness and support. The performance is scheduled to air on BBC One.
