Australian rules football, often described as a bewildering sport to outsiders, has been transformed into a high-octane, chaotic video game called Pro Jank Footy. Released globally on major consoles in 2026, the game allows players to alter rules with each goal scored by opponents. This leads to increasingly absurd scenarios, such as players becoming seagulls, a labrador interfering with the ball, or meat pies with legs providing energy boosts.
Developed by David Ashby, who previously worked on spoofs like Danger 5, this project began after a 2024 barbecue brainstorm. Ashby aimed to create a game that celebrates Australian culture and its unique sport without reservation. Broden Kelly of Aunty Donna contributed commentary to the game, which has already garnered informal tournaments in Melbourne pubs.
The game's aesthetic draws inspiration from 1990s AFL mascots and 1980s Japanese video games. Ashby intentionally excluded gambling elements and loot boxes, focusing on affordability and a couch co-op experience. He sees Pro Jank Footy as a way for Australia to embrace its cultural identity on a global stage, much like South Korea with K-pop or New Zealand with its media exports.
