Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Tony-winning activist-playwright V have joined as executive producers for the Oscar-qualified Indian short film, "We Were Here." Andrew Scott is also attached to the project as it prepares for awards season.
The New Yorker has acquired the short film and will premiere it on its YouTube channels. "We Were Here" has an impressive festival run, screening at over 80 festivals and securing more than 20 awards, including top honors at Clermont-Ferrand, SXSW, and Palm Springs International ShortFest, which made it Academy Award eligible.
Written and directed by Pranav Bhasin, the mockumentary is set in a small Indian town. It humorously depicts three retirees who protest job displacement by AI by impersonating appliances. Their protest is complicated when one of their children takes a job at an artificial intelligence company.
Bhasin, a filmmaker since age 13 and from Mumbai, stated that the film began as a "small, silly idea" but evolved into a story about friendship and resilience. He expressed surreal excitement about having accomplished executive producers and finding creative ways to reach a wider audience now that the film is Oscar-qualified.
