'Prima Facie' Film Adapts Acclaimed Play

Filmmaker Susanna White faced the considerable challenge of adapting Suzie Miller's acclaimed Olivier- and Tony-winning one-woman play, "Prima Facie," into a feature film. The adaptation significantly expands the narrative by introducing multiple characters and locations, moving beyond the original monologue. Cynthia Erivo takes on the lead role of Tessa Ensler, a successful London barrister whose life is shattered after she becomes the victim of a sexual assault. This traumatic event fundamentally alters her perspective on her career and the legal system she serves. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, highlighting its universal themes.

White collaborated closely with Miller to translate the play's intense, dialogue-driven form into a visual cinematic language. Employing a system of internal imagery and sound effects, the film remains deeply rooted in Tessa's point of view, aiming for a grounded, authentic portrayal. To enhance realism, non-actors were cast in certain roles, including police officers and clinic staff. Erivo's casting as a Black woman in a predominantly white legal world adds further layers to Tessa's experience and her struggle for recognition.

The production meticulously planned challenging sequences, including a pivotal cross-examination scene at the Old Bailey, a real historical courthouse. Intimacy coordinators were utilized for sensitive scenes, ensuring a safe environment for actors like Erivo and Daniel Ings, who plays her romantic interest. The film explores themes of systemic flaws and the personal toll of sexual crime, with White hoping it will spark meaningful dialogue among audiences long after viewing.
