Prayagraj continues to celebrate its rich literary tradition with writer Mamta Kalia being selected for the Sahitya Akademi Award 2025. She will be honored on March 31 for her Hindi memoir 'Jeete Ji Allahabad,' which captures the city's cultural essence. This marks yet another significant recognition for Prayagraj's writers.
The city's literary prominence is long-standing. In 2023, Prof Neelam Saran Gour received the award in English for her novel 'Requiem in Raga Janaki.' The preceding year, 2022, saw dual honors for Prayagraj with Badri Narayan awarded for his poetry and Janardan Prasad Pandey for his Sanskrit work.
This tradition of excellence dates back decades, with literary giants like Sumitranandan Pant (1960), Amrit Rai (1963), and Harivansh Rai Bachchan (1968) being early recipients. Notable figures such as Sarveshwar Dayal Saxena, Firaq Gorakhpuri, and Shamsur Rahman Faruqi have also been honored, solidifying Prayagraj's identity as a cradle of literary brilliance.
