Postman Builds Dream Palace Over 33 Years

Joseph Ferdinand Cheval, a rural postman in France, dedicated 33 years of his life to building the unique Palais Idéal. His architectural journey began in April 1879 when he stumbled upon unusually shaped stones during his postal rounds.

Inspired by these natural forms and images from illustrated magazines and postcards, Cheval began collecting materials. He spent nearly every spare moment after his daily 30-kilometer routes, using a wheelbarrow to haul rocks. He had no formal architectural training.

The Palais Idéal, completed in 1912, is a richly decorated fantasy structure featuring diverse elements like temples, castles, grottoes, and an array of animals and mythical creatures. Its construction required an estimated 10,000 days of work.

Initially met with skepticism, the monument gained appreciation from surrealist artists like André Breton, who saw it as a precursor to surrealist architecture. In 1969, it received official recognition when Culture Minister André Malraux designated it a French historic monument.
