Portland's Broadway Future: Study Favors New PSU Center
25 Jan
Summary
- Renovating Keller Auditorium could cost $290 million.
- A new Performing Arts Center at PSU is estimated at $650 million.
- A study recommends a new venue over Keller Auditorium upgrades.

Portland officials are considering a significant decision regarding the future of its performing arts venues. A new market feasibility study, commissioned by the Office of Arts & Culture and Community and Economic Development Service Area, recommends proceeding with Portland State University's proposal for a new Performing Arts and Culture Center. This recommendation comes as concerns linger about the seismic safety of the century-old Keller Auditorium.
The study estimates that renovating the Keller Auditorium could cost approximately $290 million and take between 19 to 28 months to complete. However, it notes that even with modernization, the Keller might not meet the seating capacity or amenities required for modern Broadway tours. In contrast, PSU's proposed center, with an estimated price tag of $650 million, would include multiple auditoriums, a conference center, and parking.
While the development of a new venue would allow Broadway shows to continue in Portland during any construction, the analysis concluded that there isn't sufficient demand to support both a renovated Keller and a new PSU venue. The feasibility study is one of several pieces of information that city leaders will review to shape Portland's performing arts ecosystem.
