Filming for the historical thriller "Santo Subito!" recently recreated the dramatic 1981 assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II. The scene depicted the moment Mehmet Ali Ağca opened fire as the Pope entered St. Peter's Square, with an actor portraying the Pope collapsing after a simulated shot, complete with fake blood. Numerous extras were present to authentically mirror the real-life event.
Despite the somber subject matter, between takes, the actor portraying the Pope was seen in casual Adidas attire, smoking and using his phone. The film is under the direction of French filmmaker Bertrand Bonello. Mark Ruffalo is also starring in the movie, playing a Vatican-linked American priest who delves into the Pope's life.
