Paris Bridge Becomes Giant Cave Art
7 Jun
Summary
- Pont Neuf is transformed into a 120-meter cave-like art installation.
- The free experience was delayed due to storm damage.
- Cars and buses were banned from the bridge during its run.

Paris's historic Pont Neuf bridge has been reimagined as "La Caverne du Pont Neuf," an expansive art installation by French artist JR. This unique, free experience transforms the 120-meter bridge into an illusion of a rugged, cave-like structure, utilizing 2,400 sqm of inflated canvas. The design draws inspiration from the bridge's original stone quarry materials and commemorates the 40th anniversary of Christo and Jean-Claude's "Pont Neuf Wrapped."
Originally slated to open on June 6 and run until June 28, the installation faced a delay due to recent storm damage. Consequently, there is no confirmed public reopening date as of the current temporal anchor. During the scheduled period, vehicular traffic, including cars and buses, was prohibited from accessing the bridge. This temporary closure aimed to facilitate the immersive art experience.
Pont Neuf, a significant landmark connecting Paris's Right and Left Banks via the Île de la Cite, was constructed between 1578 and 1607. The bridge's transformation offers a rare blend of historical significance and contemporary artistic expression in the heart of the French capital, captivating visitors with its dramatic visual metamorphosis.
