Set in Moscow in 1977, the series 'Ponies' follows Beatrice "Bea" Grant and Twila Hasbeck, secretaries at the American embassy. When informed their husbands perished in a mysterious plane crash, they are recruited by the CIA to act as spies, using their status as "Persons of No Interest" to avoid KGB suspicion.
Bea develops a complex dynamic with Andrei Vasiliev, a dangerous KGB officer, who shows unexpected feelings for her despite his ruthless nature. Their relationship is tested by a brutal interrogation scene where Bea's grandmother, Manya, a Holocaust survivor, is targeted by Andrei.
