Igloo Hotel Magic: Behind the Scenes of Pluribus Set
14 Jun
Summary
- An igloo hotel set was constructed using Styrofoam and translucent panels.
- Lighting techniques were developed to prevent reflections on the ice.
- A 360-degree one-take shot was used to showcase the detailed set design.

A stunning Norwegian igloo hotel set for the series Pluribus was ingeniously constructed on a soundstage in the Canary Islands. Production designer Denise Pizzini and cinematographer Paul Donachie collaborated to overcome the challenge of creating a realistic icy environment.
Translucent panels and Styrofoam blocks formed the igloo's structure, adorned with carved ice sculptures. To achieve a believable cold atmosphere, Donachie implemented specialized lighting and haze effects, while special effects added fake snow for texture.
For maximum visual impact, the sequence was filmed in a single 360-degree take, requiring meticulous set dressing. Even the hallway leading to the igloo presented a challenge, requiring creative set scaling and camera angles to fit the dialogue within budget constraints.
Surprisingly, the elaborate ice hotel set ultimately ended up in a dumpster, though some elements were repurposed. Styrofoam from the set was later used to create realistic body parts for other scenes, emphasizing the show's commitment to practical effects.
