Pleasantville Blu-ray Censors Key Dialogue
14 Aug
Summary
- A line about a character's sexual past was removed.
- The omission occurred in a new 4K Blu-ray release.
- The original film still retains the dialogue.

The 1998 fantasy film Pleasantville has a key line of dialogue removed from its new 4K Blu-ray release, causing a stir among fans. This specific omission occurs in a conversation between the teenage twins, David and Jennifer, as Jennifer decides to remain in the idyllic '50s sitcom world.
The removed dialogue features Jennifer explaining her newfound disinterest in casual hookups, stating, "I did the slut thing, David. It got kind of old." This part of the conversation is absent in the recent Blu-ray edition, though it remains intact in the version currently available for streaming on YouTube.
The new Shout! Factory release boasts a "NEW 4K Scan from the Original Camera Negative Approved by Writer and Director Gary Ross." However, it remains unclear if Ross was aware of or approved this specific line's removal. Representatives for Ross, Shout! Factory, and Gruv have been contacted for comment.
This edit is particularly ironic as Pleasantville itself explores themes of repression and censorship, even depicting a book burning by conservative community members. The film, which earned Oscar nominations for its art direction, costume design, and score, had a box office return of $49.8 million against a $60 million budget.
