Set to premiere September 17, Netflix's upcoming Japanese drama "Plastic Beauty" offers a glimpse into the nation's rapidly expanding cosmetic surgery sector. The series investigates the ongoing cultural dialogue surrounding beauty standards, a society increasingly embracing diverse appearances while its cosmetic surgery industry experiences significant growth.
The narrative centers on two physicians with fundamentally different philosophies regarding aesthetic transformation. One is Fumi Numata, a skilled doctor ostracized from her hospital after a critical emergency surgery. The other is Rin Tohyama, a renowned surgeon who views beauty as a form of healing. Their opposing viewpoints ignite when Fumi joins Rin's clinic with the intention of uncovering its unethical practices, setting the stage for a compelling narrative.
Starring Mayu Matsuoka as Fumi and Riisa Naka as Rin, the drama was developed after extensive research into Japan's cosmetic surgery world. Special effects makeup artist Amazing JIRO and his team meticulously crafted the distinct visual progression for each patient character, showcasing "before," "downtime," and "after" stages. The ensemble cast includes Shotaro Mamiya, Minami Tanaka, Hiromi Nagasaku, and Atsuro Watabe, among others, with K2 Pictures producing the series for Netflix.
