Stoner Comedy 'Pizza Movie' Serves Absurdity

The comedy duo BriTANicK, comprised of Brian McElhaney and Nick Kocher, presents "Pizza Movie," a 92-minute feature film centered on two college roommates navigating a synthetic drug trip. The movie bombards viewers with rapid-fire jokes and surreal scenarios, aiming to prove that a classic stoner premise can still engage a younger audience.

"Pizza Movie" features a cast including Gaten Matarazzo and Sean Giambrone, who, despite being in their twenties, still embody youthful characters. The plot follows their quest to retrieve a pizza, intended as an antidote to their trip, while experiencing increasingly bizarre hallucinations. These range from being swallowed by a giant squid to being trapped in a time loop where swearing causes their heads to explode.

The film's narrative embraces absurdity, with characters like Montgomery, a socially awkward student, and Jack, who is dealing with college pressures, encountering eccentric situations. The MINTS drug, invented by a former resident, pushes the boundaries of reality, leading to visually manic sequences reminiscent of "Scott Pilgrim" but with a "Superbad" plot on a smaller budget.

Despite its often overwhelming pace and a mix of inspired and exasperating gags, "Pizza Movie" maintains a naked ambition to amuse. The filmmakers' effort to revitalize stoner comedies for a new generation is evident, culminating in a moment that breaks the fourth wall. "Pizza Movie" is set to stream on Hulu beginning Friday, April 3.
