French composer Maxime Denuc has released 'Club Imperiale,' an album that reimagines trance and techno music through the unique timbre of MIDI-controlled pipe organs. The inspiration struck Denuc when he heard his own minimalist piece performed on an organ in a Spanish church, leading him to envision a fusion of sacred spaces and historical Mediterranean discotheques.
Denuc spent a year in Düsseldorf's St. Antonius Church experimenting with his custom-designed system. He employed a Max/MSP sequencer to manipulate the grand pipe organ, aiming to capture the pulse of classic rave music. The church's natural reverb was used to stretch and blur the tones, creating an atmosphere of 'ecstatic longing.'
'Club Imperiale' is named after a legendary club on the Tuscan coast. While its musical motifs echo early 1990s rave anthems, Denuc's execution transforms them into a hazy, deeply emotional sound. The album offers a unique perspective on the allure of forgotten dancefloors and the enduring power of electronic music.
