In a long-overdue celebration, pioneering New York filmmaker Charlie Ahearn is set to showcase his vast, lifelong artistry as a painter and mixed-media creator. Ahearn, best known for directing the influential 1983 film "Wild Style" that captured the birth of hip-hop culture, will have his first-ever UK solo exhibition at Woodbury House in London.
The exhibition brings together Ahearn's large-scale canvases, silkscreens, and mixed-media works spanning from the late 1970s to the present day, many of which are being shown publicly for the first time. These artworks revisit the imagery and spirit of "Wild Style" and the communities that shaped it, including portraits of key figures like Fab 5 Freddy and Lee Quiñones. Monumental canvases also capture the energy of this historic cultural moment.
"Seeing this body of work together for the first time is moving for me," says Ahearn. "The paintings carry my commitment to hip-hop history and to the originators of this culture." The exhibition aligns with the premiere of a new 4K restoration of "Wild Style" by Arrow Films, further cementing Ahearn's legacy as a pioneering artist and filmmaker.
