Jazz Maestro Jack DeJohnette Dies at 83 After Pioneering Career

Renowned jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette, who was celebrated for his ability to seamlessly blend diverse musical styles, passed away last month at the age of 83. DeJohnette, who died of congestive heart failure in a hospital in Kingston, New York, was a Grammy-winning artist best known for his collaborations with legendary figures like Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, and Keith Jarrett.

Born in Chicago in 1942, DeJohnette initially trained as a pianist before transitioning to the drums. He moved to New York in 1966 on the advice of pianist Muhal Richard Abrams and quickly established himself as a sought-after session musician, performing with the likes of saxophonist Charles Lloyd and the rock bands Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead. In 1969, Miles Davis recruited DeJohnette for his band, and the drummer went on to play on Davis' seminal 1970 album "Bitches Brew."
