A priceless Picasso masterpiece, 'The Painter and His Model,' is currently located in Tehran, a city facing significant dangers. This 1927 painting is considered by art historians to be the most important canvas in the world that cannot be publicly viewed. Its presence in Tehran is largely due to Iran's oil wealth in the 1970s, which allowed the country to acquire significant artworks.
Farah Pahlavi, the wife of the Shah, established the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art and amassed a collection valued between $25 million and $30 million from 1975 to 1977. By 2018, this collection was estimated to be worth over $3 billion. Despite the 1979 revolution and subsequent political shifts, the collection, including the Picasso, has largely been preserved in the museum's vaults.
The painting briefly traveled to Zurich in 2010 for an exhibition, marking its first public appearance in 78 years. This event highlighted its significance as a pivotal work between Picasso's 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon' and 'Guernica.' Although the regime has allowed 'The Painter and His Model' to be exhibited, its proximity to current conflicts raises concerns for its safety.
