Phish Dazzles MSG with Deep Dive into 1990s Catalog

Phish recently wrapped up an ambitious five-night engagement at New York's Madison Square Garden, where they meticulously recreated sets from specific years of their 1990s discography. Starting last Wednesday and concluding last night, July 29, the band explored their catalog from 1992 through 1996. Each night featured frontman Trey Anastasio in period-accurate attire, immersing fans in a chronological journey through Phish's history.

Last night's 1996-themed show at MSG was particularly notable, featuring a 37-minute rendition of "You Enjoy Myself" and a 31-minute improvisation on the Talking Heads' "Crosseyed and Painless." Drummer Jon Fishman even performed a humorous cover of Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds." The setlist included deep cuts and rare "bust-outs," such as Foreigner's "Cold As Ice" (last played in 1992) and Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" (last played in 1998), with the band performing 106 distinct songs across the five nights without repeats.

The concert concluded with an encore of The Beatles' "A Day in the Life" and "Backwards Down the Number Line," a song debuted in 2009 but fitting the chronological theme. This five-night run saw Phish performing multiple 30-minute-plus jams in a single set, a feat they had only achieved once before. The band is set to continue their tour with upcoming shows in Boston and later at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado.
