He has been diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson's disease, conditions that have rendered him largely immobile. His wife, Gigi, has stated that her own health issues prevent her from providing the intensive care he now requires.

Consequently, Bannister needs to transition from in-home hospice care to a full-time residential facility. However, this move presents a financial hurdle, with monthly costs estimated at $5,400. While a spot in a Veterans Affairs-covered facility in Big Bear, California, was considered, no beds are currently available. A GoFundMe campaign, initially aiming for $50,000, has already raised nearly $47,000, but Gigi indicates that more funds will be needed to meet the escalating costs and lack of VA support.
