The 30th edition of Estonia's Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) commences on November 6 and runs through November 22, marking the first under artistic director Triin Tramberg. This milestone event will showcase 230 feature films and 259 short films hailing from 87 countries, with a significant number of world and international premieres. Tramberg, in her inaugural year as artistic director, has adopted an observational stance, closely assessing festival operations to inform future strategies. She emphasized that the festival is in excellent health and her aim is to enhance its existing success.
This year's PÖFF places a special emphasis on Baltic cinema, celebrating Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia, alongside a strong presence of films from Latin America. Tramberg highlighted themes resonating in this year's selection, noting the recurring presence of motherhood and the emergence of a 'coming-of-age' genre for women over 35. The festival aims to provide an international platform for Baltic filmmakers, showcasing the diversity of regional talent and stories.
PÖFF, along with its associated festivals Just Film and PÖFF Shorts, is dedicated to presenting a wide array of cinematic experiences. Tramberg expressed optimism about the burgeoning film industry in the Baltic region, drawing parallels to Scandinavia's previous rise and predicting continued success and international recognition for local talent, citing recent achievements like an Oscar win for Latvia.
