Michael Peña and Anthony Ramos will headline "Free Agent," a new thriller reuniting the creative team behind "BlacKkKlansman." Charlie Wachtel and David Rabinowitz penned the script, drawing from another gripping true-life tale.
The film centers on sports agent Bartolo "Bart" Hernandez, portrayed by Peña, and his partner Julio Estrada, played by Ramos. Their efforts to help Cuban athletes achieve the American Dream led them into a world of organized crime and intense US-Cuba political tension.
Cuban-born Hernandez, a former professional baseball player, became a certified MLBPA agent. He was instrumental in securing record contracts for Cuban talent, including multiple award winners, at a time when signing such players was highly politicized.
Hernandez and Estrada were convicted of conspiracy and alien smuggling charges in Miami federal court. This revealed the extreme measures taken by Cuban athletes and their supporters seeking the American Dream.
Having completed his sentence, Hernandez is now actively involved in representing and training aspiring big-league players. "Free Agent" began as a spec script titled "Bolsa Negra," which appeared on the 2018 Black List.
Director Antonio Negret, known for his work on "The Lincoln Lawyer," is at the helm. XYZ Films is executive producing and handling global sales, with Impossible Dream Entertainment co-repping domestic rights. Producers noted the compelling nature of Hernandez's story, comparing its impact to that of "BlacKkKlansman."
Producers also expressed excitement about Peña and Ramos bringing the story to life, highlighting their talent and charisma. Both actors have recent notable work, with Peña appearing in various films and Ramos coming off of roles in FX series.
