Pavo Films, a new Paris-based production company, has entered the market with a focus on independent and auteur Indian cinema. The company was co-founded by Cosmin Illes, who has extensive experience in streaming platforms, and Némésis Srour, an academic and distributor specializing in South Asian cinema.
Their inaugural project is the Punjabi-language film 'Rehmat,' a co-production with Vahao Studio in India. The film stars veteran Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah as Rashid Ali, a man who returns to Punjab after a lifetime in England. The narrative weaves together three interconnected stories set in present-day Punjab, exploring themes of hidden protection, familial absence, and the enigmatic arrival of a spiritual figure.
'Rehmat' is adapted from short stories by pioneering Punjabi writer Ajeet Cour. The ensemble cast also includes Suvinder Vicky and Mita Vashisht. Director Gurvinder Singh, known for his exploration of Punjab's history and complexities, aims to portray how diverse communities navigate life amidst divisive forces while retaining hope and compassion.
