Hollywood actor Paul Newman bequeathed a lasting natural legacy in his adopted hometown of Westport, Connecticut. In 1997, he donated 7.5 acres of woodland, which formed the foundation for what is now the Newman/Poses Nature Preserve. This tranquil retreat, spanning nearly 38 acres, is a testament to Newman's commitment to conservation.
The preserve, located at the intersection of Bayberry Lane, Coleytown Road, and Easton Road, boasts a rich tapestry of natural environments. It features woodland, open meadow, wetlands, and the Aspetuck River. This diverse ecosystem supports a variety of wildlife, including birds, small mammals, coyotes, and protected turtles.
Following Newman's passing in 2008, his daughters, Lissy and Clea, worked with the Aspetuck Land Trust and local officials to formally establish the preserve. In 2010, the town unanimously approved its naming, honoring both Paul Newman and the Poses family, whose adjacent land was also acquired. The preserve is maintained as open space for passive recreation, allowing visitors to enjoy its natural beauty.
This unusual Hollywood legacy, established through a combination of Newman's personal donation and subsequent land acquisition, transformed private land into a public sanctuary. The Newman/Poses Nature Preserve now stands as a protected haven for flora and fauna, accessible for all to appreciate since 2011.
