Actor Patrick Dempsey will not be seeking the Maine Senate seat, despite speculation that he might replace the embattled Democratic nominee, Graham Plotner. Dempsey, known for his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd on "Grey's Anatomy," revealed his decision in an op-ed, stating he does not wish to serve in Congress. He explained that while public service is honorable, he believes his contributions can be more effective through the life and work he has already established.

Dempsey specifically pointed to his nonprofit, the Dempsey Center, as his preferred avenue for making a difference in his home state. The center provides care and support for cancer patients, a cause deeply personal to him. This announcement comes as Plotner faces significant pressure to withdraw from the race following new allegations, which he denies. Other individuals, including former state Senate President Troy Jackson and former Maine CDC Director Nirav Shah, have expressed interest in potentially running.

While flattered by the consideration, Dempsey emphasized his deep care for Maine and its people, expressing concern about the nation's direction. He concluded by reflecting on the unifying power of community support seen through the Dempsey Center, suggesting this spirit is what he hopes to see in a leader. The state Democratic Party has a deadline to replace Plotner if he withdraws.
