- David Fennessy composed the score, inspired by visual artist David Shrigley.

Opera North's "Pass the Spoon" delivers a darkly comic and surreal operatic experience, featuring a TV cookery show host as the main course. Mezzo-soprano Amy J Payne portrays June Spoon, who faces a dire fate as the opera's climax. The production, a collaboration between composer David Fennessy and visual artist David Shrigley, premiered in 2011.
The narrative revolves around June Spoon and her assistant Phillip Fork preparing a meal for the sinister Mr. Granules. Alongside them are a cast of eccentric characters, including sentient, doomed vegetables, a deeply troubled egg, and a dancing turd. Fennessy's score, performed by an 11-piece chamber orchestra in chef attire, blends 20th-century modernism with accessible melodies.
Bek Palmer's vibrant set design and Shrigley's signature quirky costumes enhance the opera's absurdist humor. Performances are lauded, particularly Payne's energetic portrayal and Frazer Scott's memorable dual role as Mr. Egg and a lavatorial character. The production successfully navigates its outlandish premise with theatrical flair.
