Production is nearing commencement in Vancouver for the queer comedy Pass the Salt. The indie project, directed by and starring Panta Mosleh, follows a sheltered Muslim-Iranian graduate student as she navigates her feelings for a young Jewish woman. Mosleh will portray the lead character, Parmiss Mansour, who grapples with coming out to her traditional family.
The film is being developed as a feature for Hollywood Suite and a six-part television series for OUTtv. Amanda Wear will play Nava, the object of Parmiss's affection, with Adam Fox and Nathaniel Vass also joining the ensemble cast. Director Panta Mosleh expressed enthusiasm for the casting, noting the chemistry among the actors.
Pass the Salt is part of a growing wave of Canadian queer-themed series. It follows the success of shows like Sort Of and Schitt's Creek, which have gained international recognition. OUTtv's COO, Philip Webb, praised the series for its "unique and intersectional take on the hugely popular romance genre."
Produced by PK Studio Productions, the project has secured development and production financing from notable Canadian funds. The ensemble cast also includes Valeh Ashraf, Moheb Jindran, Babak Haleky, Peri Allen, Craig March, Jen Griffin, Donia Kash, Hani Mefti, and Shayan Bayat.
