- Authorities have known about the park's neglect for nearly three years.
Mallikatta Park, also known as Kadri Gopalnath Park, is facing intense criticism for its deteriorating condition. The recent theft of a saxophone replica from the memorial has intensified concerns about neglect, which has been ongoing for approximately three years. Despite an initial development cost of Rs 75 lakh by Muda and MCC, the park now suffers from poor hygiene, plastic waste, and damaged facilities.
A former corporator submitted a memorandum to local officials on Saturday, urging immediate action to restore the park. He highlighted that despite repeated representations over the past three years, no significant maintenance has occurred. An estimated Rs 17 to Rs 18 lakh has been prepared for the comprehensive upkeep of several city parks, including this one, but tenders have yet to be issued.
The theft of the saxophone replica has also raised serious questions about the security of memorial installations within the park. The composer and son of Kadri Gopalnath, Manikanth Kadri, confirmed he had previously raised maintenance issues with local MLA, emphasizing the need for adequate financial resources for proper upkeep. He acknowledged that individuals under the influence of alcohol frequently gather at the park, contributing to littering and vandalism, and suspects they may be responsible for the replica's disappearance.
