'Paranormal Activity' Conjures Stage Scares

The 'Paranormal Activity' franchise has been reimagined for the live stage, presenting a haunted-house experience that departs from its original found-footage concept. This new production, helmed by a director known for immersive theater, aims to conjure fear directly in front of a live audience, utilizing clever illusions to achieve its effects. While the cinematic approach relied on suggestion, the stage version delivers more concrete scares, reportedly leaving audiences in fright and surprise.

At its core, the play follows a couple who relocate to a new house and begin experiencing disturbing phenomena. One partner dismisses the events as stress or the quirks of an old building, while the other becomes increasingly convinced of a malevolent presence. The narrative explores the strain these occurrences place on their relationship, touching upon themes of doubt and belief. However, the drama itself is noted as thin, with the plot revolving heavily around the question of whether the house is haunted.

This live iteration is a fresh story, distinct from the movie series' characters or entities. It leverages the popular 'Paranormal Activity' brand to draw audiences, similar to previous successful horror plays on stage. The production is praised for its effective use of stagecraft, particularly lighting and illusions, to build dread and deliver startling moments. Unlike its film predecessors, the play is said to deliver on its promise of a haunted house, offering a visceral theatrical horror experience.
