The second episode of "Paradise" Season 2, titled "Mayday," explores the backstories of its characters. Annie, a pregnant survivor, encounters Xavier Collins after a plane crash, initially mistaking the wreckage for the return of her partner, Link.

The episode extensively details the past, tracing the charming romance between Xavier and his wife Teri, and the events leading up to Xavier's plane crash. These flashbacks provide context for his deep grief over Teri's loss.

After his crash, Xavier encounters a group of traumatized children. Despite his own cautious nature and desire to find his wife, Teri, he develops a protective instinct towards the children, finding renewed purpose and a connection to his original motivation for leaving the bunker.

Xavier's path then intersects with Annie's. While Annie wants him to escort her to Colorado to reunite with Link, Xavier remains determined to find Teri in Atlanta. Their initial interactions are driven by mutual need, evolving into a platonic relationship built on respect and shared hardship.

Sterling K. Brown, who plays Xavier, highlighted the importance of seeing a purely platonic relationship between a man and a woman develop on screen, emphasizing how shared crises can strengthen human connections and reveal generosity.
