Noah Lennox, known as Panda Bear, and Peter Kember, also known as Sonic Boom, have developed an extraordinary artistic synergy. Their latest release, "Reset," marks the first time they share equal billing on an album.
This collaborative effort is deeply rooted in a shared admiration for 1960s pop music. The duo meticulously samples from artists of the Kennedy era, such as Randy & the Rainbows and Eddie Cochran, to construct their layered, harmony-rich soundscapes. This approach reflects a mutual evolution into a collaborative mode that dissolves traditional hierarchies between master and admirer.
The influence of "Reset" extends beyond the 1960s, incorporating elements from subsequent decades' interpretations of that pivotal era. It draws inspiration from the Elephant 6 collective, Cornershop, and the inclusive spirit of artists like The Avalanches and Daft Punk. Their sonic palette also echoes the late '00s fascination with The Beach Boys found in Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear.
Lennox, a resident of Lisbon since 2004, and Kember, who moved to Portugal in 2016 partly due to Lennox, have a long-standing creative relationship. Kember previously produced Lennox's albums "Tomboy" and "Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper." This new album showcases their ability to create simple, ecstatic, and elegant music, hitting targets for gossamer melodies and propulsive rhythms consistently.
