Panaji Shigmotsav Parade Cut Short Due to Noise Curbs
2 Mar
Summary
- Parade participant count reduced from 400 to 150.
- Festivities will conclude by 10 PM each night.
- The route now follows the Carnival parade path.

The Shigmotsav parade in Panaji will feature a reduced number of participants this year, with the count lowered from 400 to 150. This adjustment is made to ensure the festivities conclude by 10 PM each night, adhering to noise pollution regulations and the current election code of conduct. Srinivas Dempo, president of the Panaji Shigmotsav Samiti, announced that this change will prevent the procession from extending late into the night.
The Shigmotsav celebrations are scheduled to begin on March 3 and continue until March 8, with the main float parade planned for March 7. Approximately 50 vehicle-borne floats, showcasing artwork inspired by Indian mythology, are expected. Additionally, there will be a folk dance competition with at least 20 participants and a fancy dress competition for a minimum of 30 participants.
This year's event schedule includes a Konkani play on March 4, a folk dance competition on March 5, musical performances on March 6, the main romtamel procession on March 7, and Lavani performances on March 8. The Samiti has received Rs 10.6 lakh from the Goa government to distribute as cash prizes. The Samiti will also honor local artists Umakant Wadkar, Surendra Voilvoikar, and Maxim Pereira for their contributions.
The parade route has been changed from the residential 18th June Road to the main road, following complaints from residents, including senior citizens. The new route mirrors the path taken by the Carnival parade, extending from the old Mandovi bridge to DB Ground. All necessary approvals have been obtained from the mayor for the festival preparations.
