Midnight Plea: How Nihalani Rescued Jagga Jasoos from Penalty
7 Jun
Summary
- Pahlaj Nihalani helped Jagga Jasoos secure a censor certificate urgently.
- He screened the film at midnight to prevent Ranbir Kapoor's penalty.
- His timely intervention saved the film from significant financial loss.
Pahlaj Nihalani, a veteran producer and former CBFC chairperson, passed away on June 4, 2026, due to a liver ailment. Amidst discussions of his controversial tenure, an important episode showcasing his helpfulness has emerged. Senior industry member Rajesh Vasani recounted how Nihalani assisted the 'Jagga Jasoos' team, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif.
On July 3 or 4, 2017, Rishi Kapoor approached Nihalani at midnight seeking an urgent censor certificate for 'Jagga Jasoos,' with only 11-12 days before its release. The film's mixing and other work were incomplete, risking a heavy penalty for delays as per their agreement with Disney.
Nihalani immediately agreed to screen the film the following morning. He facilitated the online application process and assembled a five-member team to review the rough cut at the NFDC preview theatre. The screening concluded by noon, and by 4:00 PM on the same day, the censor certificate was issued.
This swift action allowed Ranbir Kapoor and his team to submit the certificate to Disney, averting a significant financial penalty. Nihalani stated he acted out of industry solidarity and doing what was right, not for future favors.
