The London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) has named Estonian conductor Paavo Järvi as its next chief conductor, a role he will assume from the 2028-29 season. Järvi, who has a distinguished career with numerous international orchestras, will succeed Edward Gardner. He described his connection with the LPO as immediate and energetic, particularly noting a January 2025 tour to China as a pivotal experience.
Järvi, who has maintained a home in London for three decades, aims to make classical music more accessible. He plans to introduce varied initiatives, including collaborations with contemporary artists, while ensuring the integrity of the music remains paramount. His programming will also feature music from his homeland, Estonia, alongside contemporary British compositions.
Edward Gardner, who has served as principal conductor since 2021, praised the LPO's adaptability across diverse musical styles. He expressed confidence in Järvi's ability to lead the orchestra into its next era. Gardner noted his own departure was planned to ensure his full commitment to other projects, including a Ring Cycle with the Norwegian National Opera, while acknowledging the LPO's need for his complete focus. The LPO, founded in 1932, is a resident ensemble at London's Southbank Centre and the Glyndebourne Festival Opera. Audiences can experience the chemistry between Järvi and the LPO on March 4th at the Royal Festival Hall, performing works by Tchaikovsky and Sibelius.
