Dog's Quirks Inspired Superhero's Superpowers

The inspiration for Krypto, the super-canine featured in the upcoming "Superman" and "Supergirl" films, comes from a real-life rescue dog named Ozu. Director James Gunn and his wife, actress Jennifer Holland, own Ozu, whose energetic and at times destructive puppy behavior sparked the idea for a superpowered dog. Gunn detailed how Ozu's physicality and play style served as a model for Krypto's on-screen appearance.

Ozu's unique characteristic, a single ear that stands straight up, was also incorporated into Krypto's design, serving as an indicator of the character's emotions. Since the "Superman" film's premiere in 2025, Ozu has gained recognition, with Holland observing that he appears to understand his burgeoning fame. The actress highlights the strong bond between Ozu and her other dog, Lola, a 16-year-old puggle, noting Ozu's improved social skills.

Holland, who is promoting "Supergirl" in partnership with Milk-Bone, expressed excitement for the film's release on June 26. She particularly noted the complexity of Supergirl's character, portrayed by Milly Alcock, and emphasized that the relationship between Supergirl and Krypto forms a significant emotional core of the movie. Ozu's contribution to the character's portrayal is a point of pride for the couple.
