In the sun-drenched Palm Springs home of the Wyeth family, a Christmas reunion in 2004 quickly devolves into a tense confrontation. The family, including former screenwriter Polly (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and her ambassador husband Lyman (Ed Harris), along with Polly's sister Silda (Allison Janney) and their children Trip (Joe Keery) and Brooke (Lily Rabe), are brought together under strained circumstances.
Brooke arrives with a soon-to-be-published memoir that promises to reveal explosive family secrets, particularly concerning the suicide of her older brother, Henry, years prior. This revelation ignites a fierce conflict with her parents, who fear public humiliation and the destruction of their reputations.
The play delves into the complex relationships and repressed traumas within the affluent, politically conservative Wyeth family. The narrative scrutinizes the corrosive effects of ambition, ideological divides, and the desperate attempts to conceal painful truths from the past.
Director John Benjamin Hickey's revival, staged at Broadway's Hudson Theatre, features a notable cast that brings Baitz's potent drama to life. Despite some audience and critical debate over the credibility of its ultimate twist, the production powerfully explores the nature of truth and memory.
