Oscars Open Door for India's Diverse Cinema
6 May
Summary
- Academy allows multiple films per country for Oscar consideration.
- Films winning at top festivals can now vie for nomination.
- India aims to increase its Oscar nominations beyond three.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has introduced a significant rule change, now permitting multiple films from the same country to be considered for Oscar nominations in the Best International Feature category. This addresses a long-standing issue where critically acclaimed Indian films, despite international festival success, were often not selected as the sole national entry.
Under the new stipulation, a non-English language film can be submitted if it wins a qualifying award at one of six renowned international film festivals. This offers Indian filmmakers, especially those outside mainstream productions, more opportunities to gain recognition. The Academy also clarified that the film itself, not the country, will be nominated, with the director's name featured on the statuette.
Historically, India has seen limited success in this category, with only three films making it to the final five Oscar nominations. Despite its vast film industry and rich cinematic history, this statistic has not fully reflected its filmmaking capabilities. The rule adjustment is expected to encourage more filmmakers to aim for Oscar glory.
