The competition for the Best Original Song Oscar has intensified with the submission of "La Nieve," a Spanish-language track from Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo's acclaimed film "La Bola Negra." This Cannes breakout, acquired by Netflix for an awards campaign, centers on three generations connected by a play by Federico García Lorca, where snow symbolizes grief.
"La Nieve," translating to "The Snow," accompanies a poignant scene. It was co-written by Raül Refree and performed by Álvaro Lafuente Calvo, professionally known as Guitarricadelafuente. The 28-year-old artist, a multi-platinum seller and Latin Grammy nominee, also makes his acting debut in the film.
Guitarricadelafuente portrays a Nationalist soldier who develops a bond with a Republican soldier during the Spanish Civil War. His potential Oscar nomination for both acting and songwriting would be a rare feat, mirroring past achievements by artists like Mary J. Blige and Lady Gaga.
Netflix has announced a platform theatrical release for "La Bola Negra" in U.S. theaters starting October 16, 2026. The film will then begin streaming on December 2, 2026, marking Netflix's longest theatrical exclusivity period for a film to date at 47 days.
