Oscar Isaac has revealed that a single, poignant scene from the first season of Netflix's anthology series "Beef" was the primary reason he agreed to join the cast for its second season. Isaac, who previously starred in "Star Wars" and the Marvel series "Moon Knight," was intrigued by the show's unique blend of dark humor and emotional depth.
He pinpointed an episode three scene where Steven Yeun's character, Danny Cho, experiences a breakdown during a Korean evangelical church service. Isaac found this moment, which occurred shortly after an attempted act of arson, to be "both so moving and so hilarious at the same time." This duality, he explained, exemplified the show's "razor-thin tone."
Isaac also discussed the extensive conversations he had with showrunner Lee Sung Jin, describing them as "therapy sessions" that delved into the show's themes. In "Beef" season two, Isaac portrays Joshua Martin, a country club manager whose life becomes complicated when a younger couple witnesses an intense argument with his wife, played by Carey Mulligan.
Beyond "Beef," Isaac is expanding his relationship with Netflix. His film "In The Hand of Dante," set for a June 12 theatrical release and June 24 streaming debut, features him in dual roles. Furthermore, his production company has a first-look deal with the streamer, developing projects like the Vegas-set casino drama "The Roman."
