Entertainment mogul Oprah Winfrey recently revealed the fascinating origin of her name to Keke Palmer. Winfrey's given name at birth was Orpah, a name found in the Bible's Book of Ruth.
She explained that the biblical character Orpah ultimately chose to return home, unlike Ruth. This biblical connection offers a unique glimpse into the legendary host's personal history.
The shift from Orpah to Oprah, as Winfrey is known globally, was not an intentional choice. She shared that the difficulty many people had in spelling her original name led to it being recorded as Orpah on her birth certificate. Consequently, people started calling her Oprah, and the name stuck.
