Edward James Olmos, acclaimed for his role as Commander William Adama in the reimagined Battlestar Galactica, has spoken about the influence of Ridley Scott's 1982 film Blade Runner on his career and the sci-fi genre. Olmos, who portrayed Detective Gaff in the original Blade Runner and reprised the role in Blade Runner 2049, indicated that the film's popularity, especially following its re-release, was boosted by the growing interest in science fiction, partly due to Battlestar Galactica.
Conversely, Olmos also proposed that Blade Runner's success helped pave the way for the 2003 Battlestar Galactica miniseries and the subsequent 2004 series, which concluded in 2009 after five seasons. Both Battlestar Galactica and Blade Runner have left indelible marks on science fiction. A new Blade Runner miniseries, Blade Runner 2099, is set to premiere in 2026, featuring Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer.
