- Newton-John found love again years later, but the mystery of McDermott's disappearance remained

In September 2025, three years after the passing of beloved singer and actress Olivia Newton-John, the mystery surrounding her former boyfriend Patrick McDermott's disappearance continues to captivate the public.
McDermott, a former cameraman, vanished in June 2005 during an overnight fishing trip off the coast of California. His ex-wife reported him missing more than a week later, on July 11, 2005. A subsequent U.S. Coast Guard investigation concluded that McDermott was likely lost at sea, but the case has been plagued by unsubstantiated claims that he may have faked his own death.
Some media reports have suggested that McDermott was facing financial troubles prior to his disappearance and may have staged his own vanishing to escape his debts. Investigators hired by various outlets have even claimed to have spotted McDermott living in Mexico years later. However, the Coast Guard has maintained that their investigation found no evidence of criminal activity, suicide, or a hoax.
Despite the lingering questions, Newton-John eventually found love again, marrying businessman John Easterling in 2008. She has described the ordeal as "traumatic" but has also expressed gratitude for Easterling's support in helping her move on. Sadly, Newton-John passed away in August 2022 at the age of 73 after a long battle with breast cancer, leaving the mystery of her former boyfriend's fate unresolved.
