The iconic Scenic Railway, Britain's oldest roller coaster at 106 years old, has permanently ceased operations. Located in Margate, Kent, the Grade II listed wooden ride first opened in 1920. An extensive review of its age and condition led to the conclusion that the ride had reached the end of its operational life.

This decision was made in close consultation with The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Historic England, and Thanet District Council. The Scenic Railway had been out of action since a fault was identified in 2024. Its history includes multiple fires and a significant restoration in 2015.

Dreamland Margate stated the ride will be 're-invented for people to enjoy in a different way.' The amusement park plans to host a pop-up exhibition showcasing the railway's history later in 2026 and is seeking public input for its future.
