The Oklahoma Museum of Popular Culture, affectionately known as OKPOP, is nearing its highly anticipated spring 2028 opening after a dedicated effort spanning nearly two decades. Fundraising milestones were achieved in November, propelling the museum forward. Located in Tulsa, OKPOP will showcase over 40,000 pop culture artifacts, many linked to Oklahoma artists.
Among the unique exhibits will be Thor's hammer from the Marvel franchise, a wand from the Harry Potter films, and a gremlin puppet. The museum will also feature items from Oklahoma's own creative legends, including outtakes from Leon Russell albums and Tommy Allsup's guitar. These collections celebrate the state's rich creative legacy.
Plans for OKPOP have been in motion since 2012, with significant legislative support and private donations totaling over $63 million. The museum's phased approach includes a free-access first floor with a cafe and gift shop, while the second and third floors will delve into film, television, theater, and music careers. This endeavor aims to boost Oklahoma's economy and foster a sense of pride among its residents.
